Plot Summary
The spiritual tragedy of an intrinsical noblewoman a rigid Puritan, who is sorely tempted by maternal love and by the unlawful impulse to right mundane injustice, and sins stubbornly and perseveringly. The spectacle of her severe integrity brought by her own act to a position of falsehood and shame is lit up by a sort of tragic humour
here begins her penitence and expiation.
