Summary
Johannes, a miller's son, and Victoria, the daughter of a wealthy landowner, grow up near each other and fall deeply in love — but the gulf between their social worlds seems impossible to cross. As Victoria's family faces financial ruin, she reluctantly agrees to marry Otto, a wealthy lieutenant who can save her father's estate. Heartbroken, Johannes leaves and becomes a celebrated poet, his work always inspired by her. Misunderstandings keep them apart even when they meet again. Eventually, Victoria falls gravely ill. Before she dies, she writes Johannes one final letter, pouring out the truth: she has loved him all her life, and every sacrifice she made was for him. He receives the letter only after she is gone — a beautiful, haunting story of love that outlives the chance to be together.
