About This Collection
After watching Christopher Nolan’s film The Odyssey, I decided to seek out the full, original text. The movie succeeds beautifully in bringing the epic to life in about three hours — a vivid, personal vision from the director. I’ve also seen Troy, yet I’d never actually read The Iliad — so I gathered these works together into one volume I call the Homeric Bible, because these poems were truly sacred to the ancient Greek world.
I chose to replace Alexander Pope’s translation of Odyssey with Andrew Lang’s — a version widely respected by scholars for its clarity and faithfulness to the text. Unlike Pope, who did not know ancient Greek and reworked the story to match his own era’s style, Lang’s rendering stays true to Homer.
I’ve added red page numbers throughout — these do not alter the original PDF, they simply help you find each book easily. You can also use the bookmarks in your PDF reader for quick, easy navigation between sections.
