"Are We Machines? Is Life Mechanical or Is It 'Something Else'?
A Debate Between Clarence Darrow and Will Durant" is a thought-provoking book that delves into the age-old question of whether human life can be reduced to mere mechanical processes or if there is something more to it. The book presents a debate between two prominent figures, Clarence Darrow and Will Durant, who argue opposing viewpoints on the nature of life.
The foreword sets the stage for the debate, highlighting the importance of the topic and the significance of the arguments presented by Darrow and Durant. The introduction provides background information on the two debaters and their respective positions on the subject.
Darrow's negative presentation address challenges the idea that human life can be explained solely in terms of mechanical processes. He argues that there is a spiritual or metaphysical aspect to life that cannot be reduced to physical laws and equations. Darrow presents compelling evidence from philosophy, psychology, and religion to support his argument.
Durant's affirmative presentation address, on the other hand, argues that life is indeed mechanical in nature. He draws on scientific evidence and evolutionary theory to support his claim that human beings are essentially complex machines governed by biological processes. Durant's argument is logical and well-reasoned, appealing to the audience's sense of reason and rationality.
The negative refutation section sees Darrow responding to Durant's arguments, pointing out flaws in his logic and presenting counterarguments to refute his claims. Darrow's refutation is sharp and incisive, challenging Durant's assertions with wit and intelligence.
In the affirmative refutation section, Durant counters Darrow's arguments, defending his position with further evidence and reasoning. Durant's refutation is thorough and detailed, demonstrating his deep understanding of the subject matter and his ability to engage in intellectual debate.
The book concludes with the negative rebuttal, where Darrow makes a final case for his position, reiterating his main points and addressing any remaining doubts or objections. Darrow's rebuttal is passionate and persuasive, leaving the reader with much to ponder on the nature of life and existence.
"Are We Machines? Is Life Mechanical or Is It 'Something Else'? A Debate Between Clarence Darrow and Will Durant" is a captivating exploration of a timeless philosophical question, presented in a lively and engaging debate format. The book challenges readers to think critically about the nature of life and the forces that govern our existence, leaving them with a deeper understanding of the complexities of the human experience.
From introduction
John B. Watson (Chairman) : Ladies and Gentlemen. It is a little hard for me to see why a mere mortal should be put in as chairman, considering the interest in this subject and the brilliant men who are to speak to you this evening. I suppose I was chosen because I am a behaviorist (and, therefore, anobjectionist), so that I would be an impartial chairman.
Those of you who understand behaviorism will know how impartial a chairman I shall be. (Laughter.) say, in passing, that I think this debate will unquestionably go down in history as one of the great debates of all time.
The subject, "Is Man a Machine?" is more than a mere topic for discussion. It is a matter of vital interest to all of us; it is a matter which concerns our daily conduct. You know, the behaviorist has a theory that language is merely a substitute for objects and for actions. Consequently, words spoken by others, and words that we speak ourselves, are just as potent in guiding our conduct as stick.
