Introduction
George Jacob Holyoake was a radical journalist, lecturer, and reformer who coined the very term “secularism”. His career spanned over sixty years, during which he championed freedom of thought, cooperative economics, and democratic reform.
Holyoake endured imprisonment for blasphemy in 1842, yet transformed freethought from a purely anti‑clerical protest into a constructive philosophy of life. He was also a historian of the cooperative movement, documenting the Rochdale Pioneers and shaping the intellectual foundations of modern cooperatives.
This collection preserves his autobiographies, essays, histories, and polemics, showing how secularism evolved into a social philosophy that bridged radical dissent and practical reform.
