| THE FLOOD |
Louis Roubien recalls a life of hard-won prosperity with his extended family on a thriving farm near the Garonne.
The season is May, the harvest promises riches, and happiness surrounds the brood of relatives, including Veronique and her betrothed Gaspard. A sudden, severe rainstorm swells the Garonne, and the river’s fury quickly overruns the village.
The family seeks refuge in the house, which slowly fills with water, turning their home into a floating refuge atop the flood. As the water rises, the family witnesses the collapse of nearby buildings and the death of Cyprien while attempting a rescue mission to save his wife Aimee and others.
The flood strips away wealth, safety, and certainty, leaving the survivors clinging to a precarious roof as beams, debris, and flood currents relentlessly assault them.
Gaspard and Veronique, striving to reach safety, are drawn toward the church while risking their lives on improvised rafts and ropes.
In a final, harrowing sequence, most of the family perishes, including Aunt Agathe, Rose, Jacques, and Cyprien’s fate, while Louis clings to a chimney, haunted by loss. The narrative closes with Louis’s physical and emotional ruin, the village destroyed, and the image of Gaspard and Veronique’s bridal bond preserved only in a photographed tomb—an enduring symbol of love amid catastrophe.
Short story about-80 pages . good story to understand The naturalism of Zola.
