🇬🇧 English Summary

✨ The Story

Jean Valjean spends 19 years in prison — only for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister's starving children. Released but branded a criminal, the world rejects him — until the Bishop of Digne shows him mercy: when Valjean steals his silver and is caught, the Bishop says, "It was a gift," and gives him the candlesticks too. "I have bought your soul for God," he says. That moment changes Valjean's life forever.

Under a new name, he becomes a wealthy factory owner and a beloved mayor. But Inspector Javert, a rigid police officer who believes people never truly change, recognizes him and pursues him relentlessly. Valjean promises the dying Fantine he will rescue her daughter Cosette from the cruel Thénardier family, who keep her as a servant. He saves Cosette and raises her as his own.

Years later in Paris, Cosette falls in love with the young student Marius. Revolution breaks out in 1832 — the students build barricades and fight for freedom. Valjean goes to protect Marius, carries him wounded through the sewers of Paris, and finally faces Javert one last time. Valjean spares Javert's life — and the realization that mercy is greater than the law breaks Javert's worldview. He lets Valjean go and takes his own life.

In the end, Marius and Cosette marry. Valjean, finally at peace, dies surrounded by those he loved — a man who went from thief to saint, redeemed by one act of kindness.
