🇬🇧 English Summary

Étienne Lantier, a young unemployed mechanic, arrives in the grim mining town of Montsou, in northern France. Hungry and desperate, he finds work in the coal mine — a dark, dangerous monster that swallows men, women, and even children for pitiful wages. He boards with the Maheu family, whose life is entirely consumed by the mine: they are born there, work there, and often die there.

As poverty deepens and wages are cut, Étienne — thoughtful and passionate — begins to read and speak about justice, equality, and a better future. The miners, pushed beyond endurance, go on strike. What begins as a demand for bread becomes a cry for dignity. But the mine owners refuse to yield. Hunger grows. Families starve. The army is called in, and the peaceful protest turns into bloodshed. The strike is crushed. Defeated and broken, the miners return underground.

Then Souvarine, a despairing anarchist, sabotages the mine's structure, triggering a catastrophic collapse. Étienne, Catherine Maheu — the gentle girl he loves — and her brutal lover Chaval are trapped deep in the darkness. Chaval dies; Catherine slowly perishes in Étienne's arms. After days of agony, Étienne is pulled back into the light — alive, changed, and certain that though this harvest has been lost, the seeds of revolution have been planted deep in the earth.
