History of Norway by David Noyes

This 1852 work by David Noyes is an early American account of Norway’s past, written at a time when few English-language histories of the country existed. Noyes traces Norway’s story from its ancient origins and the legendary Viking Age through the medieval period, the long union with Denmark, and into the early nineteenth century.

The narrative highlights the exploits of Viking chieftains, the introduction of Christianity, the country’s political struggles, and the social conditions of the Norwegian people up to the author’s own era.

Published just a few years after Norway’s 1814 separation from Denmark and the creation of its own constitution, the book offers nineteenth-century American readers a concise introduction to a nation whose history was then little known outside Scandinavia.
