Summary


The novel is set in the far future, around the 25th century and opens with the discovery that a massive comet is on a collision course with Earth. Astronomers calculate that the comet will strike the planet, bringing about the end of the world. As news spreads, human society reacts in various ways: some people fall into panic and despair, others turn to religious fervor or hedonism, while scientists continue their observations.
