 George Gissing (1857–1903) was an English novelist known for realist depictions of lower‑middle‑class life.  

 His major works include New Grub Street (1891), The Odd Women (1893), and The Nether World (1889).  

Will Warburton was published posthumously in 1905, two years after his death, making it his last novel.  

- Gissing’s career often explored the struggles of intellectuals, professionals, and women against poverty and social prejudice.
