short stories by Guy de  Maupassant

French writer Guy de Maupassant is famous for his short stories, which paint a fascinating picture of French life in the 19th century. He was prolific, publishing over 300 short stories and six novels, but died at a young age after ongoing struggles with both physical and mental health

Reading Form: The Accent (Guy de Maupassant)

Summary of the opening:
The story begins in a decaying house by the sea, once elegant but now neglected. Madame de Maurillac, once a celebrated beauty and flirt in Parisian society, lives there with her daughter Fabienne. After her husband’s suicide, she clings to fragile hopes of restoring their fortune through her daughter’s beauty and marriage prospects. The household is marked by faded grandeur — patched velvet chairs, rusty nails where portraits once hung, and servants who barely dust.

Selected passage

“It was a large sheltered house, with long white terraces shaded by vines, from which one could see the sea. Large pines stretched a dark arch over the ruined faΓ§ade, and there was a look of neglect, of want, and wretchedness about the place, such as irreparable losses, departure to other countries, and death leave behind them.”
