Students should study the following lists of words and their phonetic pronunciation, learning them by heart with the article attached. 

They will thus to a considerable extent faster the gender of the nouns, and overcome one of the great difficulties of the language. It is necessary that these words be pronounced aloud that the ear may grow familiar with the sounds as well as the tongue with their expression. 

The new German orthography has been adopted, according to the Rules and Lists used in the schools of Prussia and published by the Order of the Minister of Education, 1897. The phonetic pronunciation given throughout is that of the educated classes of Berlin. The accent generally falls upon the stem-syllable and is marked by an apostrophe (') after the accentuated syllable.
